bigger picture
Although Vision Express remains largely a distinct brand, Vision Express became part of the leading international eyewear retail group GrandVision NV in 1997. GrandVision has more than 7,000 stores in 44 countries and employs more than 37,000 people.

GrandVision’s commitment to long-term support for Vision Express allows Vision Express to invest not only in Vision Express’ business and employees, but also in the latest in optical test technology. The latest example is the introduction of optical coherence tomography (OCT) to more and more stores at Vision Express. OCT imaging adds a whole new dimension to your eye test, detecting retinal eye disease and early signs of disease, as well as broader health problems.

The broader focus of Vision Express
To raise awareness about caring for the eyes in the UK and Ireland, Vision Express is proud to support a range of charities that provide vital support to people affected by vision loss and other eye conditions.
Why are eye exams so important?
Your eyes are irreplaceable. You don’t necessarily have any symptoms or pain. Vision tests can detect early signs of any problem; the sooner it is treated, the better. Eye tests can detect underlying health problems you didn’t know about, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, some brain tumors, and multiple sclerosis. A vision test will detect whether your vision can be improved. You may just be used to seeing less clearly, so you didn’t realize it could be improved. Good Vision provides a better quality of life. It is essential for children that their eyes function properly for them to perform well in school. Do not accept that poor vision is due to your age. It is possible to improve it further. It is important that your vision meets legal standards for certain driving and certain occupations.

How often should I have my eyes checked?
Even if you are not aware of any problems, you should have an eye exam every 2 years. An eye exam is a regular health check that can detect potential health problems as well as changes in vision. More frequent may be needed depending on your age and medical history. Your optometrist will usually advise when you should return for your next eye exam, and they will usually send you a reminder letter.

Do I need to pay for eye exams?
The NHS offers free eye tests and helps pay for eyeglasses for eligible customers. For more information on your eligibility for this support, click here. If you are not eligible for NHS support, you will have to pay for your eye exam, which costs £25. NHS eye exams are free in Scotland.

The following categories of people are entitled to free NHS eye examinations and may also be entitled to a voucher to offset any prescribed cost of eyeglasses or contact lenses: Children under 16 or under 19 still in full-time education. All people age 60 and older and those receiving income support or the Working Family Tax Credit.

Those who receive the Disability Tax Credit are 70 years of age or younger, the maximum amount of the credit shown in their Tax Credit Award Notice will be cancelled. People receiving income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (contributing ISA does not count), diabetic glaucoma patients, and those 40 years and older who are parents/brothers/sisters/children of glaucoma patients. In addition, those diagnosed by a consultant ophthalmologist as at risk of developing glaucoma. Blind and visually impaired people are entitled to an NHS compound lens voucher and those with a valid HC2 certificate. If you do not fall into the above categories, you will be required to pay for a vision examination, which should cost you £25 in total. NHS eye exams are free in Scotland.

How old does my child need to be to have an eye exam?
Children of any age can be tested. Optometrists are advised to check it out before they start school and start learning to read. Often, vision problems can be the cause of a child’s poor performance at school, for example because they can’t see the blackboard. The sooner a problem is detected, the better the chance of successful treatment. Children’s eyes are fully developed by age 8, so it’s important to spot any problems before that.

Why does my child need to see an optometrist for an eye exam at school?
Although they are tested at school, it is not a comprehensive vision test. Their distance vision is usually checked, but this will not detect all levels of distance vision. Myopia and large strabismus may be detected, but school exams are not usually performed by eye care professionals. For a full eye exam, you should take your child to see a registered optometrist. Some vision defects cannot be corrected if left undetected for a long time.

I have astigmatism – can I still wear contact lenses?
Astigmatism is caused when the eye cannot focus light evenly. Contact lenses for astigmatism have been around for several years. Most types of astigmatism can be corrected with contact lenses. Your contact lens optician will carefully measure the exact shape of the surface of your eye and your prescription and decide which type of contact lens is best for you. Often, due to these precise measurements, specific lenses need to be ordered for you to try, as they are more difficult to fit perfectly on the eye.

Can I still buy contact lenses if my contact lens specification has expired?
Vision Express will require current and valid contact lens specifications to provide you with replacement contact lenses. Vision Express recommends annual eye exams and contact lens exams every 6 months or more as recommended by your contact lens optician.

Is there a high risk of eye infection if I wear contact lenses?
Only if you do not take care of your contact lenses properly. This is why it is important to make sure that a contact lens is completely sterile before putting it in the eye. Bacteria need three things to survive; if they’re in your contact lenses, your eyes provide food, water, and warmth! Soft lenses are filled with water so these creatures can survive in them and your contact lens storage case. If you use contact lens solutions correctly and follow the advice of your contact lens optician, the risk of infection is minimal. The importance of contact lens hygiene cannot be overstated. There are no shortcuts!

My contact lens optician told me to only wear contact lenses for 8 hours and they still look great. Why do I have to take them out?
Your contact lens optician will learn about the health of your eyes and any changes caused by contact lenses. By looking at your eyes and contact lenses, your contact lens optician can assess the health of your eyes. They will only tell you to wear less if it’s good for you. Often, there are signs that your eyes are not getting enough oxygen, so by limiting how long you wear them, your eyes will be healthier in the long run.
